3rd
Party Transfer/resale
We want to fully support all legitimate DSMLink packages in
circulation, whether it was purchased directly from us, from one of
our distributors, or second hand. Unfortunately, we are aware of counterfeit
copies being sold on various traders. This is blatant theft and we will
not support these copies in any way. They will not be eligible for upgrades
nor will the buyer be given access to our user support forum (we've
been told it's a rather good resource).
To protect yourself, ask the seller to contact us to arrange the ownership
transfer. If the seller refuses, be suspicious. Ask why. If the seller
admits it's an illegal copy, ask why he's stealing or why he feels justified
selling something he did nothing to develop. Whatever you do, don't
continue with the purchase. Notify us if you feel so inclined, but don't
simply buy it anyway. That only encourages the activity to continue
and it will strongly discourage future development efforts. Believe
us, the fact that this is happening has already played a significant
role in our future development plans. If you want to see more innovative
products for your car, don't encourage those that are doing nothing
more than copying someone else's work.
Once the seller contacts us and we verify that it's a legitimate copy,
we'll gladly add your name to the user support forum. We'll also gladly
provide all the standard upgrade services, including an option to change
the chip defaults to better match your car. In essence, we'll fully
support your new purchase. Get everything you paid for by ensuring you
purchase a legitimate copy of DSMLink.
2G V1 NOTE: All
of the above can be considered good advice for any third party purchase
of a DSMLink package. But you are especially vulernable to fraud
if you are purchasing a 2G V1 package. There are probably more
counterfeit copies of this package out there now than there are
legitimate pcakages. If you purchase one of these counterfeit
packages, we will not be able to offer an upgrade or any support what
so ever. Here are a few items to ask for from the seller.
Ask for a picture of the actual package they're going to ship.
Have them include a piece of paper or something in the photo with
a unique number or message you gave to them so you have a little more
assurance it's a picture of the package they have in hand. Check
that the package includes at least an EPROM chip with a white paper
label on it identifying it as a DSMLink chip and an OBDII adapter.
None of our OBDII adapters have a red connector end. If you
see an adapter with a red connector end, it's a counterfeit copy.
As for the EPROM chip label, confirm that it includes a 4-digit
serial number. Send us that serial number to get a little more
information about it. For sure, an EPROM chip with a white paper
label with handwritten "V1" on it is NOT ours.
Registration information
(3rd party transfer/resale)
The following is provided as a resource to use while collecting information
to register a copy of DSMLink. We will need to know the following:
- DSMLink chip ID
- New owner's full name
- New owner's e-mail address
- Requested user ID for the forums
The DSMLink chip ID is a four-digit number printed after the
word DSMLink on the EPROM chip inside the ECU. It's also printed
on the outside of the black protective box the package originally shipped
in.

Cables - replacement/purchase
Believe it or not, your 2G DSMLink cable/adapter is the key
to your DSMLink package. Do yourself a huge favor by treating
it as such. Don't lose it and don't leave it lying around in your car
while you're away. If you damage your adapter, we'll gladly repair,
often free of charge; but the damaged adapter (at least the internals)
must be returned to us first.
Because people are copying our chips, selling them, and then telling
the buyers to contact us to get a replacement cable/adapter, we've had
to suspend sales of the adapter entirely. This makes it very awkward
for someone that has their car broken into or simply loses their cable.
We can't distinguish one situation from the other on our end. We tried
for awhile, but then people got wise to what we were asking for in terms
of "proof" and just started faking that.
So we're left with no choice but to simply stop replacing cables. I
suspect this is why other shops selling similar products had to do the
same thing. You can thank anyone that you find selling copies of our
stuff for the hassle.
